Designing software for construction?
I am building a rock climbing wall in my back yard and my dad said the only way I can build it is if I can describe to him how I am going to do it. I drew out my plan, but it is very sloppy and he still doesn’t fully understand what my design is. So I thought I would look for some sort of design software. I just want something where I can make a digital model of my design that is FREE. Help or suggestions?

Best practice in 3D CAD- Top of the line software concepts
Working with top of the line software can be a designer’s dream. The software concepts create a lot of new design options compared to basic 3D CAD. They’re invaluable for the functional issues of design and detailing with situations where major jobs stretch software capacity, or technical issues require a lot of hard labour for design teams. The best 3Dconstruction software provides a strong mix of performance and functionality, and in many cases simplify the data handling as well as providing a lot of new design options.
Consultation- What you need
Whatever type of work you’re doing, it’s well worth checking out your options in advance. You may find that you have far more options available than you might realize.
For example, this is a range of 3D CAD construction software types:
3D modelling
3D modeling
Engineering drawing
Drafting software
Architectural drafting
Precast detailing
Steel detailing
Structural drafting
Design drafting
Structural steel detailing
3D rendering software
3D drafting software
As you can see, this range includes a lot of absolutely fundamental CAD options, and with major software suppliers, you can get a package which will fit all your needs. A consultation will help define what’s required, and set up a complete working system for your work.
(Note: Tekla, one of the major 3D CAD software suppliers, has a very large range of 3D CAD design and construction software options which will give a good idea of what’s available.)
Training- Creating new design capabilities
With the best software suppliers, you can get a customized package of licensed software, complete with training and support. This makes introducing new software much cheaper and easier. This ensures appropriate levels of training for staff on design teams, and improves efficiency by reducing lead time getting the in-house work up to production requirements on the new software.
The immediate effect of the integrated 3D CAD software will be to greatly increase in-house design capabilities across the board. The new generation of 3D CAD is far more efficient as a business tool than its predecessors. You can get a range of additional features like project management software which can help streamline your management process as well. This software will even generate custom reports for you.
The business angle- Best software for full design functions and efficiency
With the new software comes increased design capacity in terms of volumes. The best 3D CAD allows you to take on much bigger jobs. That creates many more business opportunities. It also ensures you can stay current with the new design and contract requirements created by advanced 3D CAD.
Data management is also greatly enhanced. This is particularly useful on the very high data load jobs where you absolutely must have efficient handling of specifications, reports, and the inevitable number-crunching work on the plans themselves.
Think about what you need, even make a wish list, and get in touch with the professional suppliers in 3D CAD software for a consultation. It’s worth it.

Pre-design, Design & Detailing costs of constructing Steel structures
Reducing the production costs of the Steel structure is crucial in the complete development of a building or industrial structure. To find out possible cost savings, the engineer needs to have thorough knowledge about costs of Steel construction and software that helps him prepare an estimatation.
Design costs involves three components:
1) Pre-design cost
2) Shop design cost
3) Steel Detailing and working drawing costs
In the pre-design stage most of the time and efforts are required for main frame design and the stability analysis of the structure. The structural engineer focus only on connections that affect the stability of the structure. This includes rigid or semi-rigid connections with basic calculations.
In shop design stage the engineer needs to detail all the beam-column-end plate connections that affect the stability of the steel structure in detail.
In steel detailing stage the steel detailer or draftsman dedicate most of his time on detailing connections in the steel structure. Advance CAD tools such as Tekla (previously Xsteel) and AutoCAD with their 3D modeling and automization capabilities help draftsman to set up the steel frame. Detailing of other connections and printing and plotting of the drawings is carried out subsequently.
Use of 3D Modeling for detailing steel structures has become the standard worldwide. The 3D system comes with specific modules dedicated to each job such as pre-design, detailing, erection schedule, etc to help detailer reduce production time and cost. At present these systems are mainly used for the detailing and sometimes for estimating. Two main benefits include:
1) The fabricator gets a clear understanding of what is estimated – resulting in less errors
2) 2D shop drawings can be generated automatically
3} Connection design with 3D analysis help detect clash
Promoting the advance technology in steel design makes the fabricator more competitive. The above mentioned advantages helps fabricator reduce delivery schedule, improve design quality and overall profitability.
